DHLAB, started in 2026, is a space for computational and interpretive experiments at the intersection of humanistic inquiry and digital methods. Housed in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence in India, it hosts computational tools and archival datasets produced in the University. DHLAB is one of the first dedicated digital humanities labs in India, with a primary focus on South Asian languages and archives.
Digital Humanities is an umbrella field that brings computational methods to bear on humanistic questions. At its core, as Schreibman, Siemens, and Unsworth established in the work that named the field, Digital Humanities is concerned with "using information technology to illuminate the human record, and bringing an understanding of the human record to bear on the development and use of information technology" (A Companion to Digital Humanities, 2004). Or, more simply, it is — as Kathleen Fitzpatrick puts it — "a nexus of fields within which scholars use computing technologies to investigate the kinds of questions that are traditional to the humanities" (Planned Obsolescence, 2011). What holds this range together is a shared orientation where the questions are always humanistic, and the tools are always open to scrutiny.
In South Asia, Digital Humanities remains a relatively new and underexplored field. DHLAB at SNIoE works to examine concerns that arise from the social realities of South Asia. We conduct research and build tools calibrated to South Asian contexts and pursue questions that emerge from the region's textual and archival inheritance.
